People with diabetes are at risk for developing several eye diseases including diabetic
retinopathy, macular edema, glaucoma, and cataracts. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common eye disease
in people with diabetes. It affects over 5 million Americans aged 18 and older. Usually both
eyes develop the disease. Diabetic retinopathy progresses in four stages. The most severe is
proliferative retinopathy which can lead to severe vision loss. Fortunately there are very effective treatments to prevent severe vision loss related to diabetes. The key to prevention is regular eye exams at least annually or as directed by your doctor.
